The winners: HFM US Performance Awards 2019

Steven Schonfeld picks up outstanding industry achievement accolade; Magnetar named firm of the year

Steven Schonfeld picked up the outstanding industry achievement accolade at the HFM US Performance Awards in New York on Wednesday night.

More than 400 industry executives and fund managers gathered at the Cipriani for the annual ceremony celebrating the best performing hedge funds and funds of hedge funds across 40 categories.

The founder and chairman of Schonfeld Strategic Advisors received the special award, which is designed to recognise those who, over the course of their careers, have helped to define the spirit of the hedge fund sector through their professional and charitable contributions.

Schonfeld, a recognised leader in securities trading who has been managing hedge fund investments for over three decades, has built a multi-billion-dollar global multi-manager hedge fund platform with 80 portfolio managers across quantitative, fundamental equity and tactical strategies.

Accepting the award, Schonfeld reflected on the evolution of his firm, changes in market structure, the importance of diversity of thought and people, and “giving back” across many causes.

“The one thing that hasn’t changed over the decades is our focus on our greatest asset: our people,” he said. “Talent is our strategy and I’m proud we’ve built an organisation that focuses on fostering a culture where portfolio managers and employees’ happiness are the focal point of every decision we make.

“We are in the talent and relationship-building business and that is what guides us.

“We seek to create an offering which helps us attract, and most importantly retain, the best people. This is the guiding principle upon which the firm was built.”

Among the big winners on the night, Magnetar Capital was named management firm of the year, while Campbell and Company, Citadel, NuWave Investment Management, and Private Advisors picked up multiple awards.

The awards were hosted by Los Angeles-based writer, actor and stand-up comedian Ivan Decker.
